Chewbacca is like most other Wookiees: tall, strong, short-tempered and possessing amazing mechanical and technological skills. He has long, thick brown fur, and wears a bandolier over his left shoulder. The bandolier holds quarrels (ammunition) and energy packs for his powerful Wookiee bowcaster. Chewie, as the others of his species, keeps his long, sharp, retractable claws hidden, and is able to make them pop out when he needs them for climbing.


Chewbacca was born about 200 standard years prior to the Battle of Yavin. He is native to the jungle planet of Kashyyyk, which is located in the Kashyyyk System in the Mid Rim. Chewie is rwook, a Wookiee sub-species. This meant that he was from Rwookrrorro, a giant Wookiee city in the trees. The rwook Wookiees typically bore brown, red and chestnut fur. There are many other Wookiee sub-species, although they are all loosely related.
 

As a child, Chewie had a natural fascination with technology and starships, and became one of Rwookrrorro's most promising mechanics and pilots. He had learned to fly almost all of the types of ships on the planet. His father, was a shorter, gray-furred Wookiee. He loved his son and sometimes carved and whittled him gifts made of wood from wroshyr trees, native to Kashyyyk. When very young, Chewie also became a champion player at dejarik, or holo chess. But when he lost, which thankfully wasn't often, he became furious. Even Chewie's best childhood friend, Salporin, sparingly played Chewie, for his temper often got out of control.

Chewbacca became bored and, after hearing glorious stories about the galaxy around him, Chewie decided to embark on a journey. For nearly 140 years (remember, Wookiees live to be very old), Chewbacca wandered and explored the planets and space around him. But unfortunately he was unaware of the danger his people were in. While Chewbacca was away from home, the evil Galactic Empire had risen to be the highest strength in the galaxy, led by former-Senator Palpatine. The evil reptilian Trandoshans, who lived on Trandosha, which neighbored Kashyyyk, convinced the Empire that the Wookiees were formidable slaves, and their great strength would be an important asset to the Empire's construction business. The Empire agreed to enslave the Wookiees, as they had other species. All Wookiees, whether on Kashyyyk or not, were considered wanted.

                                     Coruscant

Chewbacca was eventually found, and sold into slavery, but not before killing five of the slavers before he was finally contained and subdued. He was taken to Coruscant, the Imperial capital, and put into heavy labor.

Chewie was assigned to help build the Imperial Hall of Heroes on Coruscant, and he slaved under Commander Nyklas, a vicious Imperial officer who was quick to his blaster. Lieutenant Han Solo, a promising young Imperial officer who had joined the Empire a little over six months earlier, was assigned to assist Commander Nyklas in his slave-driving duties. Nyklas had been beating a defenseless Wookiee, Chewbacca, with a force whip Han knew that the Wookiee was about to turn on his master, and Han also knew that Nyklas would have pulled his blaster and killed the poor Wookiee. Han couldn't just stand there and let it happen. Just as Nyklas was about to pull the trigger, Han shot him. Lieutenant Solo's military career with the Empire was over, as he was dishonorably dismissed from the Imperial Navy.
 

After that, Han had spent nearly two months drinking ale and acting depressed when he noticed that the Wookiee was always following him around, and found the shadow to be quite annoying, initially. But the Wookiee proved himself, and Han began to accept him as a good friend. Chewie, as Han began to call him, owed Han a "life debt" for saving him from death. It was a very important part of the Wookiee culture, and it stated that any Wookiee whose life was saved by someone else must protect that person, and owe him his life.

Things got better when the pair won a light stock freighter in a Sabacc tournament. In the final round, Han and master gambler Lando Calrissian competed and Han bluffed out Lando and won a ship, named the Millennium Falcon. Han and Chewie spent a lot of time working on the ship and making improvements.

Chewbacca and Han's friendship developed into one of the best smuggling partnerships in the galaxy. They smuggled for various organizations and worked under criminal powers until they finally settled with Jabba the Hutt, a fat, worm-like crime lord.

The pair returned to Kashyyyk. Han had a cargo of explosive quarrels he could sell to the Wookiees. It was valuable cargo, as the Empire had control of the planet, and the Wookiees were short on ammunition to fight them. The experienced Wookiee technicians helped Han improve the Falcon's condition and helped spruce up her engines to pay them back for the much needed supplies.

Soon after returning to their smuggling runs, Han and Chewie got in deep trouble when Han jettisoned a cargo of illegal spice he was smuggling. An Imperial ship was about to board and search the ship, as it was suspected of mysterious activities, when Han jettisoned the cargo in order to avoid arrest. He came back later to pick up the spice, but it was gone. Jabba became furious and put a bounty on Han and Chewbacca's heads. Bounty hunters were searching the galaxy for the dynamic smuggling pair.
 

A stroke of luck fell their way when they were lounging in the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine. Obi-Wan Kenobi hired Han and Chewie to fly him, Luke Skywalker, C-3PO and R2-D2 to Alderaan. After a brief skirmish with Imperial authorities on the planet, they were on the way to Alderaan.

After finding out that Alderaan had been destroyed, the Falcon was intercepted and taken aboard the Death Star. They successfully hid from the Imperials and then found out that Princess Leia Organa was scheduled to be terminated. Luke knew who the princess was and he persuaded Han to try to rescue her because she was very rich and he would be rewarded. To pull off the rescue Chewie was disguised as a prisoner and Han and Luke were disguised as stormtroopers to gain access into the detention block where Leia was being held. When they reached the detention block they told the head guard Chewie was being transferred to their prison but the guard said he had to check because he hadn't been notified. Just then Han threw Chewie a gun and yelled "he's loose" followed by Han, Luke, and Chewbacca wildly shooting all the guards and security alarms. After all the shooting someone said over the intercom that troops were being sent to see what happened, Han knew that they were in trouble because there was only one way in or out. Troops started pouring out of the entrance just as Luke was rescuing the Princess, but when they both emerged from the cell they discovered they were trapped. Princess Leia, angry with the pathetic rescue grabbed Han's gun shot open a garbage chute and made everyone jump in. When everyone reached the end of the chute they saw that they were in a large chamber with metal walls filled with mountains of junk and garbage, there was a door but it was locked tight leaving no way to get out. Suddenly the side walls began to move inwards so as to crush the garbage, they tried desperately to stop the walls from moving but nothing worked. In all the panic and confusion Luke had forgotten he had a comm-link but as things were looking bad he remembered and called 3PO telling him to shut the trash compactor down quickly, the walls stopped just in time.  While all this was going on Obi-Wan managed to disabled the tractor beam projector but not without escaping totally undetected as Darth Vader tracked him down and a lightsabre duel ensued. The dueling Jedi ended up right in front of the hanger the Falcon was in just as the rescuers along with the Princess arrived there. Obi-Wan gave up his life to Darth Vader to allow them to escape.
 

They eventually reached the secret Rebel base on Yavin IV (a dense jungle planet), although the Imperials had been tracking them. Luke tried to talk Han into helping in the attack but he said it was sounded like suicide to him and he wanted to be around to spend his reward for flying them to Alderaan and saving the Princess . Chewbacca wanted Han too help the rebels and he gave him a sad look but Han said "I know what I'm doing" and started packing up his reward. While the Falcon was leaving, a large battle began between Rebels and the Death Star. The Rebels had found a flaw in the massive Death Star's design, a thermal exhaust port which led directly to the main reactor. They believed that the Death Star could be destroyed if a starfighter's proton torpedoes were fired into the port. The approach was hard, navigating through a narrow trench defended by turbolasers and TIE (Twin Ion Engine) fighters. The Rebels had Y-wing bombers make the first attack, but they were destroyed by TIE fighters. A group of X-wings made another attempt, but their torpedoes missed the exhaust port. Luke flew his X-wing fighter into the trench to try again. The fighters with him were destroyed when Darth Vader and his two wingmen attacked. Vader piloted his experimental TIE Advanced starfighter, and his wingmen flew normal TIEs. Luke was about to be shot down when one of Vader's wingmen exploded in a fireball. The wingman on Vader's left . It was the Millennium Falcon! Chewie and Han had saved Luke's life, and the Rebellion. Luke fired the torpedoes, the station was destroyed, and a huge celebration ensued. Luke and Han were given medals of honor, and Chewbacca did not receive one, seeing no need for such a material possession. .
