Soon after the Death Star had been destroyed, the Rebel forces were driven from their hidden base by Imperial troops and pursued across the galaxy. Finally evading the dreaded Imperial Starfleet, the Rebel forces established a new secret base on the remote ice world of Hoth.
Shortly thereafter, an Imperial probe droid found the new Rebel base. When the
Imperial fleet arrived, the Rebels' defensive shield prevented the Imperials
from destroying the base from orbit, so they landed ground troops. The Rebel
defenses were overwhelmed by the Imperial forces. During the battle, the Rebels
quickly evacuated on troop transports. Han was escorting Leia to her transport
but the ceiling caved in so they had to use the Falcon to escape. They had to
hurry to the ship because the Imperial troops were after them. After reaching
the Falcon, Han dispatched the Imperial troops that were after them with a gun
mounted under the ship 
and took off just as Darth Vader was entering the hanger.
As the Falcon sped off into space, leaving the frozen planet behind, the
Imperial Star Destroyer Avenger was in hot pursuit, and there were two more
coming right at them. Han flew in front of one of the star destroyers and did a
heart stopping nose-dive just as the other ships converged nearly crashing
into each other leaving open space right in front of them. Han pulled the level
used to jump to light
speed but nothing happened; the group found out that the Falcon's hyperdrive was
broken, and they were stuck. Han was quickly trying to decide what to do next as
TIE fighters and a Star Destroyer were fast approaching. The only thing he could
think of was to go into the middle of the Hoth Asteroid Belt. When they had
gotten deep into the asteroid field they came upon a large asteroid with a deep
tunnel to hide in.
Chewie and Han worked vigorously to repair the broken ship. But they were startled to find out that they were inside a huge space slug, which was burrowed into the asteroid. They barely got out, but in doing so they were discovered by the Imperials as they left. Han made up an ingenious plan to hide on the back of one of the attacking Star Destroyers, so they couldn't see the Falcon on sensors. When the garbage was dumped from the back of the Star Destroyer, the Falcon floated away with it, undetected. But as they set a course for Cloud City, little did they know that they were being followed by the notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett in his ship Slave I.
They eventually reached Cloud City where Han and Chewie met up with their old
pal Lando
Calrissian. While Lando was
showing them around, C-3PO wandered into a
room and was shot by a stormtrooper.
He was disassembled and placed in the garbage room. Chewie who suspected something
strange was going on,
eventually found the disassembled 3PO, and gathered up all of his body
parts as they
were about to be thrown into a furnace. Chewie brought
the dismantled droid back to the rooms they were staying in and showed the parts to Han and Leia. They were trying to decide if 3PO could be repaired when their
conversation was interrupted by Lando, who invited them to dine with him. But
when the dining room doors opened, Han, Leia, and Chewie saw Boba Fett standing
inside and sitting right
beside him was none other than Darth Vader. Han quickly
drew his blaster and rapidly fired at Vader, only to have his shots deflected
with the Force. Then Vader used the Force to rip the blaster from Han's hand. Stormtroopers surrounded them: It was a trap! Han was subjected to torture,
which left him weak. Then Chewie was placed in a room with a huge sonic
amplifier. The noise caused excruciating pain for the Wookiee. Later, Chewie
tried to reassemble C-3PO, and got him completely together except for his legs.
Darth Vader had used the torture to lure Luke Skywalker to Cloud City, and he
planned to freeze Luke in a modified carbon-freezing chamber.
Then he could transport him to the Emperor, so Luke could be turned to the dark
side.
But it had to be tested first, and Vader chose to put Han in the chamber.
Before
Han was placed in to be frozen, Chewie became furious and killed several
stormtroopers before Han was able to calm the Wookiee down and tell him that
everything would end up right in the end, and that they would have another
chance. Chewie watched and howled in horror as he saw his best friend and the
person he was supposed to protect being frozen into a block of carbonite. Han
survived the process.
As Luke Skywalker arrived, Chewie, Leia and the half-assembled C-3PO were being escorted to Darth Vader's ship to be taken as prisoners. But Lando ordered the Cloud City guards to free them, and they held up the stormtrooper escorts and took their guns. Chewie began to strangle Lando and almost killed him for letting Han be frozen and taken away by Boba Fett to Jabba. But Lando told him, "There's still a chance to save Han" and Chewie released him. The group tried to save Han before Slave I got away, but they failed. Then, after a few skirmishes with stormtroopers, the group found their way to the Falcon and successfully escaped. But Leia sensed that Luke was in trouble and turned the ship around. They were able to find Luke, whose right hand had been cut off in a duel with Vader.
As the Falcon was escaping Bespin, it was being chased by TIE's and looming ahead was Vader's Super Star Destroyer Executor waiting to intercept them. As the Falcon was being rocked by blasts from the attacking TIE's the deflector shield warning lights started flashing so the group knew it was time to go to lightspeed. Then a green light on the control panel started flashing and Leia said "The coordinates are set,Chewie it's now or never" and with that he pulled the hyperdrive lever only to have no results. As Lando and Chewie scrambled to try to fix the hyperdrive, R2-D2 who knew what was wrong calmly went over to a control panel and turned a switch. Causing the Falcon to jump to lightspeed sending everyone crashing into their seats and R2 onto Chewies head just as they were to be caught in the Executer's tractor beam. The group returned to the Rebel fleet, and Luke's hand was replaced with a robotic one. The group planned to meet up on Tatooine to get Han out of Jabba's palace. Luke, Leia, and the droids decided to stay behind on the Medical Frigate Redemption until Luke was fully recovered.
