The Millennium Falcon is a highly modified YT-1300 freighter which was made about thirty years before the battle of Yavin on the planet Corellia and used for the transport of goods across the galaxy. The standard YT-1300’s were lightly armed with two light laser cannons on each mandible and defended by light deflector shields; the ship was also made surprisingly quick for its size, in realspace and lightspeed as well. The YT-1300 is a very easy ship to modify because of its large power core which is capable of handling more powerful enhancements, and the large amount of extra space inside of each ship.

The Falcon was once owned by Lando Calrissian and at that time he was in the smuggling trade and used the Falcon for that purpose. Han Solo was also in the smuggling business at the time and he and Lando were good friends and they would often play a popular card game called sabaac. Their friendship was strong until one of their games got a little out of hand with Lando betting his prized ship the Falcon in the game and losing her to Han.

When Han and Chewbacca were working for Jabba the Hutt they greatly modified the Millennium Falcon for smuggling by adding many expensive and sometimes illegal improvements. The defensive capabilities have been greatly improved with duralloy plating covering most of the ship, powerful sensor jammers, and an enhanced deflector shield system provides the Falcon with warship-grade shielding powered by a set of advanced Kuat Drive Yards Novaldex, and Nordoxicon shield generators. The Falcon’s weapon’s systems have been upgraded with two sets of military-class quad laser turrets one mounted on the top of the falcon and one underneath, two concussion missile launchers, and a small hatch-concealed antipersonnel repeating laser cannon.

When you are in the smuggling business you must have a ship with proper attributes to stay that way, you need the ability to hide your cargo to avoid detection, a way of being one step ahead of your enemy, and you must be able to make a quick getaway. To hide important cargo Han put hidden cargo holds under the floor plates and he also added a special feature to jettison cargo in an emergency. To help Han and Chewie keep ahead of potential and current enemies they added high-grade sensor suites which are tied into the Falcon's dorsal sensor dish. To be able to make a quick exit the Falcon has been equipped with an advanced navicomputer used for hyperspace travel, and the speed, quickness, and maneuverability of the Falcon has been greatly increased helping to give it the reputation of being one of the fastest ships in the galaxy.

Han and Chewbacca took on an extra job to help pay off their debt owed to Jabba for dumping a shipment of spice upon being boarded by Imperials to avoid being caught. The job was the transport of two passengers and their two droids to Aldaraan but it turned out to be much more than Han had bargained for. The job Han and Chewbacca had taken ended up being the end of their smuggling career but the work they had done to the Falcon would be of great use in their new occupation as freedom fighters in the Rebel Alliance.
